Ange Milthorpe

Linguist and Anthropologist
Ange Milthorpe was 'adopted' 20 years ago into her Anangu family (Pitjantjatjara people, from Docker River in the Western Desert near Uluru) and a few years later into her Yolngu family (coastal people from Ramingining, North-East Arnhem Land). These heart ties are strong and she spent many years immersing herself in each of their cultures and learning to speak Pitjanjtjatjara and Yolngu Matha; as well as studying each of their respective kinship systems so she has a good idea where she fits in within each family and Community. In 2008, the strength of this relationship culminated in Angie raising $80,000 in philanthropy and sponsorship and taking 30 of her Aboriginal family members on a road-trip across Australia in order to introduce them to her biological family, and to share the best of her culture with them, as they had done so generously with her. (Link to 8 mins video footage of this trip - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQfSf83pqRI  )

Although she now lives in NSW the relationship is ongoing and Ange takes her children to visit whenever she can and also hosts Yolngu and Anangu visitors whenever they manage to visit. She is planning a long trip to the NT next year...
